Belgian online platform Red Bull Elektropedia have – as part of our 25 years celebrations – commissioned a series of special reworks of some of our notable classics. Red Bull Elektropedia have been a major force in documenting Belgian culture and nightlife since 2009. Their output exudes professionalism and the content is always interesting and accurately detailed. We’ve worked with them in the past and when they said they wanted to help us celebrate this year, of course we accepted. They have enlisted the talents of some of Belgium’s finest contemporary music artists to work their magic, and we couldn’t be more happy with the results. The reworks are available on CD, Digital and Vinyl and if you head over to Red Bull Elektropedia’s website you will find excellent mini docus on each artist. On top of that they have also produced an in depth documentary around the Bonzai story. Featuring rare unseen footage of Bonzai studios and the artists that passed through its doors, we also get various testimonies on the good times and tougher times from label founder Christian Fly Pieters and business partner Marnik Braeckevelt as well as contributions from several other key players from the early Bonzai days, artists and fans. The documentary will be aired at special screenings on 14th October 2017 and then general release online shortly after.
Belfast technoist Louis Irvine returns to Bonzai Basiks with the stomping beats and penetrating basses of his new Saturn EP. This is his first solo effort since his Alpas EP back at the end of 2016. Just after that he had two smashers alongside fellow Irishman Conor Doc with Shade EP and Sequence EP under their Orenda guise. We know Louis loves to ramp up the deeper frequencies so make sure you set your bassbins to maximum effect.
One of our longstanding artists Sa.Du aka Greek techno guru Thanos Dimitriou returns with another stomper Last Chance. This guy has dished out some serious bangers in the last 6 years and it’s no wonder we get excited when his new material comes through the inbox. To date Sa.Du has a very impressive list of released tracks and remixes across various top quality labels including, Bonzai Basiks, B-Limited, Eyepatch Recordings, Bonzai Progressive, Ak-Tek Records, Mint & Mustard Recordings, Wasabi Records, Hi Fi Stories and many, many more. Thanos is someone who puts all his efforts into making music that speaks to the listener in a way that gets ingrained on the memory, in his own words – “Each track has a piece from my mind and my soul”. With a philosophy like this you can be sure that only the best will do.
Abib Djinn debuts on Bonzai Basiks with the sublime Cartago Nova EP. Abib joins us from our sister label CZ where he has already enjoyed a couple of solid releases and an appearance at the Amsterdam Dance Event. He is a self confessed genie of dark techno vibes. He loves to create decadent dark atmospheres and hard parties. A wonderful up and coming talent with a lot to offer, this guy is most definitely one to watch for the future, most likely the dark side of the future.
Berlin based Portuguese DJ and producer JEPE returns to Monog with the fantastic Utopian EP. This one follows his debut back in 2015 when he appeared on remix duties for Joal – My Favourite Outfit EP. Since his early beginnings Jepe has built a solid resume in music, always pushing himself to the absolute limit with elegance and flair and this tour de force of creative energy shows no signs of stopping anytime soon. He started out in 1994 on local radio stations in Portugal, which led to his first residency in the Estacao La Luz club, a residency he has held since 1997. From here he got into production and has released on many top labels including Let’s Play House, Circle Music, Cecille Records, Brown Eyed Boyz, Beef Records and Get Physical as well as his own label, Blossom Kollektiv. As his discography continues to grow in 2017, you can only expect even more quality cuts. So jump in, buckle up, and join us for the ride.
Orenda returns with another techno slice entitled Sequence EP which is a follow up to their very successful debut – Shade EP. This dynamic duo is made up of two Belfast lads – Louis Irvine and Conor Doherty and together they are tapping in to the pumping techno niche with gusto and versatility. Their debut ranked high in many charts, with a top 10 placing on Beatport among others. They received positive feedback from many jocks as both tracks from the EP ripped up floors around the world. After speaking to both these guys we can tell they have plenty more to offer and are ferociously keen to spread their magical techno dust across the globe. Keep an eye on Orenda, they’re lurking and ready to pounce with more absolute stompers.
Belgian technoist Van Czar is back at Bonzai Basiks with Danse Du Petit Matin which comes backed up with a fine remix from Jamez. Van is all about the music, he never fails to deliver the goods with quality always at the forefront. Aside from creating cuts like this he is constantly on the lookout for great new music for his label CZ, which is already gathering a hugely impressive back catalogue of sounds. We always look forward to his latest offerings, he never disappoints.
Iga Dep returns to Bonzai Progressive with the fantastic two tracker Fat Analog which comes with remixes from two hugely talented artists, Stan Kolev on Fat Analog and Van Czar on Arctic Human, as well as original mixes for both tracks. Iga Dep is fresh off the back of his debut for BP – Indigo – which proved popular among many having charted very well indeed and getting a run out from many jocks. No doubt this one will follow suit, we just love it here in the office.
Belfast lads Louis Irvine and Conor Doherty are the talented producers behind techno outfit Orenda. This recently formed duo have come up with something really special in the form of their Bonzai Basiks debut – Shade EP, that will translate well on the floors giving the crowd something to get down to. Belfast based Louis is no stranger to Bonzai having already released three quality cuts on our Progez imprint as well as a superb remix on Matt Holliday’s Underworld over on Bonzai Progressive. He continues to relish in his passion for music and over the last couple of years he’s rededicated himself to producing top notch sounds, with staggering results. He is always on the lookout to learn new techniques and thrives on his own challenges to get his sound to where he wants it. No doubt we’ll be seeing more from Louis in the future in both solo and duo formats. Conor Doherty is a native of Belfast but now resides in Melbourne, Australia. He’s been producing for around 10 years and in that time he has used various aliases and diced with different genres from minimal techno to more harder edged sounds. He has enjoyed gigs around Ireland, the UK and Australia and seen his music released on the likes of Modern Dance Records, Kontact Records and NB Records. A child of the 90’s he was witnessing a burgeoning dance music scene and knew he had to be a part of it. His early producing days found him churning out melodic to more harder stuff but he always seemed to go back to what he really loved, dark and dirty full on techno. Towards the end of 2016 they started to chat together and Orenda was born. The distance between them doesn’t seem to interfere, Conor does his thing while Louis sleeps and Louis picks up when Conor sleeps, and it works as you will soon find out. An exciting new project that we will definitely be seeing more of so stay tuned.
As our 25th year celebrations gather momentum we pick up the pace with a reimagining of another absolute banging track from back in the day. One of our most prolific and successful artists Yves Deruyter gave us Calling Earth back in 1994 which was the A-side to IV – BR 94061 – and backed with Rave City (Cherry Mix). The original was the epitome of the sound of the time and quickly rose to mega status among throngs of ravers and DJ’s. A string of remixes followed as well as multiple releases over the years. The man himself relentlessly churned out hit after hit putting him at the top of his game and, to this day he is still very much revered by his peers. This special 25 years remix is delivered by London based DJ and producer Han Haak and he certainly does the track justice with his slick rendition. In 2012 Han decided to brings his brand of twisted sounds to the masses and his tracks where very quickly championed by a slew of top DJ’s. He is described as being amongst a new wave of rising talent that will make the underground scene much stronger. His passion and drive will most definitely give him the opportunity to make this happen. We’re delighted to have him on board for this one and we hope to see more from him in the future.
