Javi Alvado & THC aka Victor Alvado make their Piston debuts with the superb two track, Brooklyn Tales EP. The guys started to DJ together back in 2009 and have went on to perform at top venues across Europe including placed like the Plastik Beach Club in Ibiza. In 2012 they started producing together and have amassed many releases across various labels. Their style is a cross between Tech House, Deep House and Techno which makes for some diverse results. They currently run A&R on Ultradrum Records.
First up is the title track Brooklyn Tales with its classic intro, solid kicks and nice crispy hats with sharp claps soon following, this gets the rhythm flowing beautifully and sets us up for a wonderful dancing experience. Old school styled synth stabs are the mainstay here and bring an edge to the track allowing memories of the heady days to surface. At the low end a raw sub bass lurks menacingly yet holds back enough to let the stabs run free and dominate the sound. Cool vocal samples give the track a lot of character making this a definite must have.
Grip Me intros with a nice punchy kick and cool percussion pattern that become infectious as the rhythm builds. Excellent stabbing synths filter through and are joined by cool vocal samples. The bass lets loose with a fathomless sub tone aimed to get you right in the chest with its pulsating groove. The big hitter though are the very cool synths and keys that bring that true house vibe to the sound with a fresh appeal. Superb stuff here that will gain a lot of attention for sure.
San Francisco based LuRob aka Luis Roberto makes a welcome return to Piston with his Slippery When Wet EP. We last saw Luis back in March 2013 and since then he has continued to grace the finest House establishments as well as releases across various labels.
First up we have the Original Mix of Twin Peaks Lounge which intros with a beautifully filtered funky groove filled with lush tones and grainy guitar licks. The track lets loose with a fantastic punchy kick and shuffling percussions that will definitely get floors moving to the groovy rhythms. The track goes deep with a wonderful pulsating bass that contrasts perfectly with the brighter elements as those funky riffs remain prominent. The track also boasts classy melodic sequences which are joined by some brilliantly crafted drum arrangements. Top notch stuff from Luis and a definite must have.
Dave Dubbz provides the remix on Twin Peaks Lounge and goes right into the heart of deep house grooves. We saw Dave on Secrets Of The Trade 2 back in 2013 with his track Funky Thrills. Dave has seen a multitude of releases across many labels he also remixes many artists including JR From Dallas and Joss Moog. Here the track gets into full swing right from the off with pacey rhythmic groove made up of tight kicks and sharp hats to the backdrop of cool snare rolls. The warm bass comes through beautifully and gives a real sense of depth to the sound. Big chord stabs litter the sound as house synths begin to filter through. The big feature on the track has gotta be those drum arrangements, ever evolving and complex, they will definitely keep those dancing feet moving.
Meet Me After Dark rounds up this stunning EP with its slightly tougher stance as big chunky kicks are joined by harsh and crispy hats alongside some very cool percussions. The bassline evolves out of the depths with a resonating power that dominates the low end. In contrast the track works brilliantly as the harsher sounds meet warmer tones. A great vocal riffs throughout the track adding lots of character and reinforcing the tougher edge. A true deep house groove that will find a home in the deeper sets for sure.

Our next Piston release comes as a real treat, a trio of artists at the top of their game have joined forces to deliver a stunning slice of smooth deep house vibes. D-Compost & Leandro Silva have recruited the heavenly vocal talents of Veselina Popova on their Piston debut Feel Alive. D-Compost is a DJ and producer who spends his time between Lisbon and London. He got into dance music from a very early age thanks to his older brother. When he moved to a new town at just 13 years of age he quickly settled into life in a new school and became involved with the local radio station. Lots of DJ bookings followed and soon he got into production where he has gained worldwide recognition due to his unique style which is derived from a love of many different genres. Angolan DJ Leandro Silva began to play music in 1997 and turned professional in 2001. He has plied his trade in Luanda ever since and has continued to promote and expand his music with residencies in top clubs all over the city. His DJing skills transfer to music production with ease and he has racked up a very impressive back catalogue across many top labels. Rounding up this trio is Bulgarian vocalist Veselina Popova. After her participation on a local televised talent show Veselina embarked on a singing career with a few Pop releases coming soon after. Currently she focuses her attention on House music projects and with her stunning vocal range we are glad she chose this particular path.
The Original Mix is a true floor filler with its upbeat vibe reminiscent of the heady days of early Chicago House. A tight drum arrangement sits over some smooth keys and a bassline that will have any ass shakin’ resulting in a fine flowing rhythmic groove. The big hitter has to be the vocal which just captivates from the first bar. You instantly get hooked in its catchy phrases and will find yourself singing along in no time. An absolute stomper here that will no doubt be a big hit on many floors across the world.
The Dub Mix leaves out the vocal and concentrates on the smooth deep house grooves on offer. Punchy kicks and rhythmic percussions lead the way as that strolling bassline forces you to move your feet with its dancey vibe. Swirling keys and cool melodies give that upbeat feel making this a definite must have track.
The Heat goes in a slightly tougher direction with a big chunky kick and sharp, more crispy hats that contrast beautifully with the warm lush tones of the deep synths that swirl around and draw you in. A raw sounding oldskool style bass ploughs through the sound and will give the bass bins a bashing. As the track evolves we are treated to some subtle melodies that contrast well with the deep rooted nature of the track. One for the late night darker rooms that will keep the floors in full effect.

UK producer Capryo debuts on Piston with his superb three tracker Hold Back EP. Based in London and a relative newcomer to the scene, Capryo likes to delve into House and Techno and with this new EP we get a very cool blend of the two with a leaning towards the deeper house side.
First up is the title track Hold Back, nice and smooth classic percussion intro that gets the heads nodding with the booties soon following. Soft chords fade through and bring that deep house feeling into the mix before we get pounded by a monster kick and throbbing bass combo that will have the bassbins shuttering. Super crispy hats and tight percussions provide a solid rhythmic groove that will no doubt keep any floor rocking, not to be missed.
Entity is up next and gets right in on the action from the off with a solid 4×4 beat with chunky kicks and crispy sharp rhythmic percussions. Expertly tweaked deep chords come through giving a wonderful texture to the groove as subtle vocal samples play out. The bassline is perfectly placed among the rolling kicks to provide a super solid groove in which to shake that ass to. The break dishes out some very nice synth and key work alongside very cool vocal samples. A very tight pumping groove that will be a welcome addition in any set.
Move On completes this fantastic EP with a brilliant driving hypnotic trait. The intro gives a big punchy kick and bright crispy hats to get things moving while a high pitched string is contrasted with smooth deep melodic chords. The big hitter here is the superb bassline that just drives the groove beautifully creating that hypnotic feel, this feeling is heightened with the addition of some cool vocal samples. On the break we get a brilliant synth riff and superb drum sequence that takes us back to the main groove. One for the late night parties here and a definite must for the deep house masses.
Manchester based DJ and producer Wrighty debuts on Piston with Drop The Bass. Wrighty has been around the scene for a while now and boasts a very impressive back catalogue which includes originals and remixes on labels like Digital-Muzik and Bedroom Muzik. He delves into Deep and Tech House and here we get a fine example of his skills.
Drop The Bass intros with a classic punchy kick and sharp hat combo that sets the rhythms off smoothly. Rich pads and a very cool synth riff fade through and take us up to the monster bass that really gets the grooves flowing in the track with its raw analogue sound. Classic vocal samples add cool character to the track and will be easily recognisable. The break brings those pads and synths back with the vocal samples being the dominant force before we get slammed right back into this relentless groove. Top notch cut and not to be missed.
Can You Feel It gives off an energetic vibe from the get go with pounding kicks and rhythmic percussions. The beats fade to reveal a dark bassline as an eerie pad rises before the bass takes over and settles us into this solid groove. Very cool and perfectly tweaked synth stabs give a retro feel to the sound which is enhanced by vocal samples on the break. An absolute slamming track that will no doubt be a feature on many sets.
