The legendary Rick Wade makes a welcome return to Piston with his ‘Zombie RP’ which comes backed up with a superb remix. Rick’s last outing ‘Night Flyer’ saw much support from all quarters and no doubt we will be seeing a lot more support with this latest offering.
We kick off with the Original Mix of the title track ‘Zombie RP’ which gets us moving with classic kick and hat intro. A fantastic big double bass soon takes over the sound as the grooves begin to shuffle along. A nice and warm piano finds its way in alongside a subtle stab and wispy FX. Superb stuff from Mr Wade and an absolute must for those late night groovy floors.
The head honcho at Piston, Rogerio Martins, lends his skills at the mixing desk with his Rotting Deep Remix of ‘Zombie RP’. Rogerio recently released his own ‘Gonna Be Mine’ on vinyl which is proving to be an increasingly popular choice of media in these days of technology. Here Rogerio gets things moving with a chunky kick and a superb array of hats and cymbals that give off a classy vibe. The bassline dominates the track beautifully as the main hook appears and takes us up to the break where deep chords being to rise before slamming us back into the groove, not to be missed!
‘Mighty’ is up next with a chunky intro filled with phat kicks and a cool percussion arrangement. Sweeping synths set the mood brilliantly and make way for a pulsating bassline that just rolls along the groove superbly. As the track evolves layers continue to build and result in a full flowing deep and funky house vibe. We get a few respites in the short breaks that occur before we are flung back into this relentless groove. Fantastic stuff and a track that will be a main feature in many sets for sure.
Piston Recordings label boss Rogério Martins is next up on his own well-established label with a new track that gets plenty of great remix treatment from Joss Moog, James Dexter and JR From Dallas.
Martins has steered his label through a dizzying amount of quality releases since 2007 picking up support from the likes of Laurent Garnier and John Acquaviva who have confirmed themselves as fans in the past and this new release is sure to find just as much favour with the top dogs.
‘Gonna Be Mine’ is the one Martins original and is a classical inclined bit of mature house music with sombre piano chords draped over nicely shuffling percussion. Subtle human sounds litter the arrangement and more lively stabs enter the fray in the latter half but essentially this is all about the warm and inviting groove.
Remixing first is Paris man Joss Moog, who has released on Robsoul and has a very uniquely musical approach to everything he does. Here he reworks the track into a bit of authentic old school disco with knotted basslines, plenty of vibrant and jangling percussion and warm chords. It’s a great rework and he also provides an exclusive digital only remix that is even more unhinged, funky and freewheeling.
Next up is young UK house talent James Dexter, who has appeared on plenty of great labels in this, his breakout year, and shows why he is so rated with this remix. It’s a stripped back and dubbed out, firmly rooted bit of house music for the heads with tough beats are and lush chords. Closing out the package is Gourmand Music boss and Chicago House purist, JR From Dallas. His Ghetto mix is suitably quick licked, dirty and sleazy, with plenty of abrasive percussive loops rattling along next to busy drums and various vocal sounds.
For house heads there can be few better labels than this, and Piston’s latest offering might just be its best yet.
