The emphatic Placid Larry delivers yet more of his sublime downtempo chilled out grooves for our listening pleasure with his latest offering entitled Elastic Sum. Placid Larry aka Daniel Ray Van Zyl is a name synonymous with chill out and breaks, he has amassed a hugely impressive back catalogue spanning many years and with each new production comes a more enriched sound than the one before. Great to see him back at his Bonzai Elemental home and no doubt we’ll see more from him in the future.
Elastic Slum sets us off on our journey deep into chilldom with a wonderfully lush and melancholic vibe that lulls you into its grasp. Slow downtempo beats lead the way as the soft piano chords and basses embrace us while harsher guitar lick provide some interesting contrasts. A stunning piece perfect for those lazy nights.
Get Up And Run intros with a stabbing piano chord that splits your imagination wide open as you wait for the next sound. That sound happens to be a superb retro style bass synth that creates depth to the groove. A pacey drum arrangement gives off a drum n bass vibe as the mesmeric sounds grab our attention. A hybrid downtempo slice that stirs up all kinds of colourful images, top notch.
Herbal is a trippy little number that gives you the tools to create some wonderful imagery in your mind. Hypnotic bright synth plucks are offset against a deep bass and clangy bells for maximum effect as a cool shuffling percussion arrangement meanders alongside. A very nice piece to sit back and relax to.
