After the recent success of the mighty Orlando Voorn’s collection of Classics on Bonzai Basiks, we decided to have our very own underground techno maestro Van Czar lead an exclusive remix pack of Orlando’s work. We think you’ll agree that Van has totally outdone himself on this one and showed a lot of respect for the original sound that brought about a legacy that spanned over 20 years. We spoke to Van about this project and we got the feeling that he spent many hours working tirelessly using his arsenal of instruments and all his energy, to ensure the integrity of each track remained intact. Van and Orlando have a lot of upcoming collabs that will be found on Van’s own CZ label, and the pair will also work alongside the legendary DJ Pierre who is pencilled in to provide the remix on one of their tracks, and as if that wasn’t enough they have also secured a remix from one of the Godfathers of techno, Anthony Shakir.

Kevin Saunderson is an American electronic music producer. At the age of nine he moved to Belleville, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit where he attended Belleville High School and befriended two students, De rrick May and Juan Atkins. Saunderson, with Atkins and May, (often called the “Belleville Three”), is considered to be one of the originators of techno, specifically Detroit techno. He is married to Sharmeela Lamarsha Saunderson. Although frequently associated with Detroit, Kevin Saunderson spent the early years of his life in Brooklyn, New York, before moving to Belleville, Michigan, a rural town some 30 miles from Detroit. As teenagers attending Belleville High School, Atkins, May, and Saunderson were fans of DJ Charles “The Electrifying Mojo” Johnson and the pop, disco, and funk music he played. Atkins and May soon became serious about mixing others’ music and creating their own, but Saunderson pursued other goals first, studying telecommunications and playing American football at Eastern Michigan University. Atkins had begun recording with Cybotron in 1981, but it was not until 1985 that May followed suit and made a record. Initially concentrating on becoming a DJ, Saunderson watched the six-month-long process as May completed “Let’s Go;” he was inspired to create his own music.
Kay Barton aka Kay Piranha debuts on Bonzai Progressive with the superb Return 01 which comes with 2 brilliant remixes from Van Czar and Jesper Mauerhoff. Kay was born in Northern Germany in 1980. From just 14 years of age he started to realize he had a passion for electronic music and his ideas soon turned into tracks with his computer using basic DOS operating software. After moving to Southern Germany near Heidelberg in 1997, Kay was given the possibility to actually work on his career for the first time. Besides producing he started working as a DJ and ever since he plays dynamic techno, house and electro swing DJ sets. For more than 2 years he has been a part of La Nuit Boheme, the biggest event series for swing and electro swing music in Germany, as a resident DJ. Over the years Kay has played in many national and international locations, at events like Love Parade, Street Parade and G-Move as well as for several German broadcast transmitters and radio stations.
Italian DJ and producer Giuliano A.L. debuts on Bonzai Basiks with the fantastic Winter EP which comes backed up with remixes from Bonzai stalwart Van Czar. Giuliano brings his own style to Deep House and Tech-house and loves to display his passion for a variety of musical influences. At age 14 he began doing some casual DJ sets in local disco – Mythos – and there after he became the resident DJ running both Saturday nights and Sunday afternoons for more than a decade. In 2002 the opportunity arose to play in Switzerland where he played with International DJ’s such as Victor Simonelli and was widely sought after by the crowds for his music. After a few years away from the scene he moved to Ibiza and rekindled his love of dance music. It wasn’t long before he got right back into things playing at top Island venues. Giuliano has been a proud returning resident to the fantastic Ocean Beach Ibiza bringing a taste of his style to the massive crowds flocking to enjoy the day time club scene. He is regularly invited to play guest sets from time to time in other island hot spots such as Pacha, Space, Eden, Destino, the legendary Pikes Hotel, El Hotel Pacha, Sands beach bar in Playa díen Bossa and Pukka-Up Vip Boat parties. Winter sees Giuliano turn all of his focus into the studio to concentrate on his production projects. As a producer he has released on labels like Go Deva Records and Tonspur Records where he released an EP, remixes and tracks. In summer 2014 Giuliano collaborated with the iconic Hotel Es Vive along with Iban Mendoza to create their 10 year anniversary CD on Seamless Records. Delighted to have this guy onboard at Basiks and we hope to see much more in the future.
Van Czar returns to Basiks with a brand new collaboration with Majed on their Panimic EP which comes packed with four quality remixes as well as the outstanding original. Van is fresh from his latest vinyl release – The Force, which featured the Saunderson family including Dantiez, Ann and the legendary Kevin. This is not the first time Van and Majed have joined forces in the studio, back in 2014 they put out the In Vino EP and then Majed stepped in on remix duties for Cysxe & Minitech Projects Acid Planet EP.
Our next Bonzai Basiks release – The Force – comes courtesy of a fantastic collaboration of artists featuring Belgian DJ and producer Van Czar, DJ and producer Dantiez Saunderson and UK songstress Ann Saunderson. Van continues to lead the way in deep techno grooves and his tracks are always powerful tools in the mix for many jocks. After he joined Dantiez on their back to back set at this year’s (2015) Legacy Festival, they decided to get together in the studio and soon after they started working on this fine cut. Over the last few years Dantiez has taken after his legendary father, Kevin Saunderson, and released quality cuts on several labels including Kevin’s own KMS. The guys then decided to employ the soulful, gospel-esque vocals of Dantiez’s mother, Ann. Back in 1992 Ann featured as backing vocals on the anthemic Pennies From Heaven by Inner City which was headed up by her husband Kevin, and went on to record several high profile tracks over the years. To keep it all in the family we get treated to a wonderful remix by the legend himself, Mr Kevin Saunderson who led the way in the early Detroit house and techno scene and gave the world some of the most memorable tunes ever with Inner City and others.
