ORLANDO VOORN – CLASSICS – VAN CZAR REMIXES (BONZAI BASIKS)

After the recent success of the mighty Orlando Voorn’s collection of Classics on Bonzai Basiks, we decided to have our very own underground techno maestro Van Czar lead an exclusive remix pack of Orlando’s work. We think you’ll agree that Van has totally outdone himself on this one and showed a lot of respect for the original sound that brought about a legacy that spanned over 20 years. We spoke to Van about this project and we got the feeling that he spent many hours working tirelessly using his arsenal of instruments and all his energy, to ensure the integrity of each track remained intact. Van and Orlando have a lot of upcoming collabs that will be found on Van’s own CZ label, and the pair will also work alongside the legendary DJ Pierre who is pencilled in to provide the remix on one of their tracks, and as if that wasn’t enough they have also secured a remix from one of the Godfathers of techno, Anthony Shakir.

Originally written by Juan Atkins and Orlando back in 1994, Infiniti – Game One was (and in many quarters still is) a monster of a track that helped define an era. Remixing legends is not an easy job to take on, but Van Czar has certainly risen to the occasion on this one. On the remix Van takes the original elements and works them into a pounding, modernised club weapon while staying true to its roots. Big chunky kick drums are offset with crisp hi hats and a deep rumbling bassline. Throughout the track we’re treated to some expertly crafted synths and FX that create surreal melodies. Top notch stuff and the perfect way to kick off this pack.

In 1992 Orlando gave us Flash, under his Fix guise and would become one of the biggest techno tracks ever. On the remix Van wanted to stay true to the original sound and with some degree of difficulty he decided to give it its distinctive club appeal while retaining an underground vibe. Lots of layers that blend beautifully result in a definite floor filler here as deep rooted sounds layer up beautifully. The kick drums open up the sound as they pump out a solid dancey rhythm alongside cool hats and percussions while the bass lurks on the low end delivering a superb deep groove. Swirling pads come through on the break and add wonderful textures to the sound as they morph and contort, drawing us in. Excellent stuff once more, not to be missed.

Next up we have Van’s remix of Wiggle that sets off with a distinct rhythmic pulse as the congas go to work. This super tight arrangement will definitely have any floor moving as nice and chunky kicks are met with a cacophony of percussions that create intricate rhythmic patterns. The track has a very cool and dark melodic streak that runs through it, due in part to the always moving bassline and the fantastic synths and pads that dominate on the break and beyond. A definite must have track that will give any dancefloor a boost of rhythm.

Another big hitter from 1994 is Orlando’s alias Complex and the track Midi Merge. Van deliberately wanted to give this one as much club appeal as possible without ruining the tracks ethos, and we think he’s hit the nail on the head, again. Right from the off you get sucked into an infectious dancey rhythm that will lure you onto the floors no doubt. A deep, funky, sexy laden groove oozes out of the bassline while up top a tight arrangement of pumping kick drums and intricate percussions do their thing. Adding to the groovy nature of the vibe we’re treated to some very cool synths and sparse vocal snippets that come and go. This one is a must for any techno jock looking to get the floor energised.

Rounding off this impressive pack we have Van Czar’s Jam Remix of Orlando Voorn – Face. Keeping true to the original works throughout, Van delivers the goods yet again with a top notch club inspired pumping remix. Big chunky kick drums lead the way as a deep probing bassline weaves its way through the arrangement while an expertly crafted percussion section dishes out a solid rhythm that will surely get the bootys shakin’. Amidst the myriad of drums and percussions lies a very cool voice that stays the course of the track, this keeps the track firmly rooted in the techno arena and blends perfectly with the more clubby elements. Top notch stuff indeed.

The title track – Ibiza Legacy is up next and personifies the tech house sound of club life on the Island. We are met with a super tight drum arrangement that flows effortlessly delivering a cool rhythm while swirling pads fill the background as a grooving bassline keep us moving on the floor. Fantastic stuff that is not to be missed.

Sand On The Heart dishes out a full on slice of tough edged techno beats as a melodic pad swirls over head. We see Van’s attention to drums prevail here, his drums are powerful and really set the track alight with their driving energy. From here we are led into the tech house realm of A Minuit Je Ne Sais Plus Ou Je suis which carries a bit of a bouncy groove with that playful bassline that dances across the sound. Cool drums get the rhythm flowing as chord stabs fade through delivering the house elements in style. Van’s tribal roots can be picked out here and once again we see a fine slice with the drums at the forefront.

Bises Marines intros with a beautifully warm synth coupled with a fading melodic arp and cool voices. As we are mesmerized by the beautiful, swirling pads a fresh drum section emerges complete with chunky kicks, crispy hats and sharp claps. Just the tonic for a late night session on the terrace. Going even later into the night we have Desalmada that delivers a solid, powerful slice of techno that hypnotizes with its darker tones and a brilliant vocal. We go deeper into techno with Colaboradora which intros with a superb punchy kick and throbbing bass combo alongside cool percussions and a static hi hat that stands out amongst the lower frequencies. A droning pad emerges and takes us on a surreal journey with its ebbing and flowing sequences leaving us on a high. Excellent stuff.

Brightness In My Balearic Lounge is a wonderful slice of tech house complete with a beautifully crafted synth sequence. A strong tech house beat remains a constant throughout the track as those fantastic layered synths carve out a cool groove making this a definite must have track in your collection.

Ether sets off with a punchy kick drum and a deep pulsating sub bass creating a smooth tech house groove. A round of percussions form up and deliver a cool rhythm as the kicks are joined by an on beat bass that gives the track a raw energy. Van used his own voice on this one for the heavily FX’d vocals that work so well in the sound. A fine display with some very cool FX throughout, excellent stuff.

The penultimate track on this album – Bella Augusta is a pacey affair that intros with a nice and smooth sequence filled with punchy kicks and shuffling percussions. An intense pad fades through and takes us to a short break before we get slammed back into full on techno mode. We’re treated to some superb synths here that give the sound a wonderful texture. KEVIN SAUNDERSON FEATURES THE FORCE IN TRAXSOURCE 2015 YEAR CHART

Kevin Saunderson is an American electronic music producer. At the age of nine he moved to Belleville, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit where he attended Belleville High School and befriended two students, De rrick May and Juan Atkins. Saunderson, with Atkins and May, (often called the “Belleville Three”), is considered to be one of the originators of techno, specifically Detroit techno. He is married to Sharmeela Lamarsha Saunderson. Although frequently associated with Detroit, Kevin Saunderson spent the early years of his life in Brooklyn, New York, before moving to Belleville, Michigan, a rural town some 30 miles from Detroit. As teenagers attending Belleville High School, Atkins, May, and Saunderson were fans of DJ Charles “The Electrifying Mojo” Johnson and the pop, disco, and funk music he played. Atkins and May soon became serious about mixing others’ music and creating their own, but Saunderson pursued other goals first, studying telecommunications and playing American football at Eastern Michigan University. Atkins had begun recording with Cybotron in 1981, but it was not until 1985 that May followed suit and made a record. Initially concentrating on becoming a DJ, Saunderson watched the six-month-long process as May completed “Let’s Go;” he was inspired to create his own music.

We’re proud he picked Van Czar & Dantiez Saunderson featuring Ann Saunderson’s release The Force to be featured in his 2015 Year Ending Chart on Traxsource.

KAY BARTON – RETURN 01 (BONZAI PROGRESSIVE)

Kay Barton aka Kay Piranha debuts on Bonzai Progressive with the superb Return 01 which comes with 2 brilliant remixes from Van Czar and Jesper Mauerhoff. Kay was born in Northern Germany in 1980. From just 14 years of age he started to realize he had a passion for electronic music and his ideas soon turned into tracks with his computer using basic DOS operating software. After moving to Southern Germany near Heidelberg in 1997, Kay was given the possibility to actually work on his career for the first time. Besides producing he started working as a DJ and ever since he plays dynamic techno, house and electro swing DJ sets. For more than 2 years he has been a part of La Nuit Boheme, the biggest event series for swing and electro swing music in Germany, as a resident DJ. Over the years Kay has played in many national and international locations, at events like Love Parade, Street Parade and G-Move as well as for several German broadcast transmitters and radio stations.

The Original Mix delivers a cool slice of tech house with a pumping groove that will keep the floors alight. Punchy kicks and crispy hats provide a tight rhythmic flow as a throbbing bassline holds the track together. A wonderfully tech fuelled sound dominates on the break as it pulsates sending the mind into overdrive and is joined by a synth stab that builds us back up into the main track for the duration. A proper, punchy slice of tech for the floors, a must have.

Van Czar delivers yet another blistering remix, something we have become accustomed to over the years. We usually see this guy over on Bonzai Basiks or Eyepatch Recordings, but he has made the jump over to BP in an unexpected twist to offer up his talents once more. A very hard working artist, Van juggles hosting Bonzai Basik Beats Spain with various gigs in and around Madrid as well as finding time to create a slew of remixes and original works for Bonzai and other labels. Here on the remix Van lets loose with a wonderful Tech House groove right from the off with his Club Remix. The intro throws up a tight drum arrangement with a chunky kick at the forefront. A tech rich stab gets the track into full swing as layers build with a cacophony of sounds straight outta the space age. Fantastic stabby synths resonate throughout the track to the backdrop of those tight drums and percussions. A definite must have track for sure, proper dancefloor fodder.

Dutch DJ and producer Jesper Mauerhoff returns to Bonzai Progressive on remix duty and delivers a solid slice for the floors. We first got a taste of this guys talents back in the Summer of 2015 with his BP debut Eyes Wide Shut which was followed a few months later by Trip To Strip, as well as appearances on a few compilations in between. The remix notches up the tempo slightly as those punchy kicks make their mark against a superb synth chord and a gritty bassline. This one builds beautifully resulting in a full on tech groove with just a hint of progressive coming through on the arrangement. Tough offset basses are the perfect match for those splashy snares that cut through the sound brilliantly. A monster of a tune that will appeal to many.

Winter sees Giuliano turn all of his focus into the studio to concentrate on his production projects. As a producer he has released on labels like Go Deva Records and Tonspur Records where he released an EP, remixes and tracks. In summer 2014 Giuliano collaborated with the iconic Hotel Es Vive along with Iban Mendoza to create their 10 year anniversary CD on Seamless Records. Delighted to have this guy onboard at Basiks and we hope to see much more in the future.

The Original Mix of Caracas intros with a tribal-esque percussion arrangement that is joined by a superb punchy kick that gets the track moving into top gear. A warbly synth bass takes over alongside some curious voices that add a cool dimension to the sound. Those basses become the big focus as they transform into many mesmerizing shapes that lock you on to their powerful tech grooves. Top notch stuff that will no doubt be a strong favourite in many sets.

Madrid based Belgian DJ and producer Van Czar delivers the first of 2 remixes in this superb EP. Never failing on the quality front this guy always notches up a solid performance both in original works and remixes. His last outing was alongside Majed with the brilliant Panimic EP and proved popular among many deep, dark, techno sets. Prior to this one he had a vinyl and digital release with The Force which featured the legendary Kevin Saunderson as well as his wife Ann and son Dantiez. We’ve no doubt that this guy will continue to pile on the quality and we always look forward to his sounds coming through the office. Van’s Black Beach Remix of Caracas opens with a solid kick that carries a massive punch and is soon met with a deep throbbing bass that rises from below. Haunting voices present a sinister backdrop to a sound that drips with intensity. The attention to detail is sublime with simple yet highly effective FX delivering cool textures to the sound. On the break things quieten down before a massive wall of sound brings us to the climax and back into full on mode. Another tough offering from Van that is sure to be a top pick among many.

The Original Mix of Winter sets out with some cool synth plucks before a nice and chunky kick takes over alongside a shuffling, rhythmic hat pattern. The track soon delivers its tech grooves in style as a fantastic driving, bubbling bass is introduced. In the background we get a tight percussion section that keeps the track flowing through a cacophony deep tones. Cool textures emerge creating a real sense of space and surroundings before a strange hypnotic chant comes through to send the groove on a surreal trip. Brilliant stuff that will definitely be an asset in any mix.

Van Czar’s Jam Remix of Winter rounds of this EP in style and yet again we are exposed to the sheer brilliance of this guys talents. The track opens with a percussion driven tribal tech groove that has you hooked in from the first few bars. A perfectly placed bass adds a bit of oomph to the groove as those percussions keep a steady flowing rhythm. Short breaks provide little to no respite from this stomper as a wall of noise rises before you. A real solid slice of tech to keep the floors moving, this one is a must have.

VAN CZAR & MAJED – PANIMIC EP (BONZAI BASIKS)

Van Czar returns to Basiks with a brand new collaboration with Majed on their Panimic EP which comes packed with four quality remixes as well as the outstanding original. Van is fresh from his latest vinyl release – The Force, which featured the Saunderson family including Dantiez, Ann and the legendary Kevin. This is not the first time Van and Majed have joined forces in the studio, back in 2014 they put out the In Vino EP and then Majed stepped in on remix duties for Cysxe & Minitech Projects Acid Planet EP.

The Original Mix is a trek deep into the techno sound and full of wonderfully crafted sounds to mesmerize us. A very subtle kickdrum leads the way and is backed up by crispy hats and a tight percussion arrangement that delivers a smooth rhythmic flow. A cacophony of warm synths fill the void as a subdued bassline lurks deeper in the groove. A straight up dark techno offering that is a must have for sure.

Brazilian DJ and producer Lauro Martins returns to Bonzai Basiks with a superb remix. We first got a glimpse back in the Summer of 2015 with his debut remix on Cysxe’s OXO EP which gained great support from many quarters. The remix here intros with a fantastic kick that packs a lot of low end and leaves a nice trail of bass in its wake. Subtle synths crop up throughout but here it’s definitely all about the bass. The bassline rattles along with a dominating force and moves in so many ways that will leave bassbins wanting more. A real deep and moody techno monster here that you gotta get into your collection.

Amsterdam based DJ and producer Sirena aka Renske van Kollenburg debuts on Bonzai Basiks with this stunning remix. Sirena boasts 15 years of active involvement in the electronic music scene and Ibiza’s DC10 sounds. She started out as a music journalist and from there she secured many contacts in the scene and started to work on various projects including Ultra Music Festival Miami, Coachella Festival USA, Awakenings, Amsterdam Dance Event, IMS Ibiza, ID&T, Pacha and Arminís label Armada. 2015 will see her release her first creations on Bonzai and KMS. Here she takes a deep and dubby techno approach to the remix. The muffled intro fades into existence with beautifully warm pads that are soon joined by a chunky kickdrum and superb chord stabs that will definitely have the booties shakin to the no doubt. Crispy hats come through and keep the rhythm flowing as the groove deepens. A top notch effort that will see a lot of playtime for sure.

Sirius Brown returns to Basiks with his remix and gets the energy levels ramped up a notch with a much more pacey and harder hitting techno slice. We last saw Sirius back in February 2015 with his debut – Click Time, which saw good support coming in from many quarters. Here the remix gets moving with a tough thumpy kickdrum alongside some sharp crispy hats that dish out a cool rhythm. Sinister sounding synths glide through the sound with a wide resonance filter that gives it a harsh edge. On the break the synths continue to dig into your brain as a very dark haunting voice comes through and fits perfectly with the sound. A wonderful slice of the deeper, darker side of techno.

A firm favourite around these shores – Onofrio Conte offers up his slice of techno on the remix. This guy has been around for a while now and has dished out some quality sounds for Bonzai Basiks and Sounds R Us Recordings. Always a pleasure to see his work come through and we know what to expect when his name is attached. The remix throws up a real techno stomper as chunky kicks are met with a tight rhythmic hat and percussion arrangement. Super cool basses operate on various layers and provide a solid platform for the techno grooves to flow. In the background a myriad of FX go off adding some wonderful textures to the sound while on the break we get treated to a simple kick with haunting atmospherics before we get thrust back to the main groove for the duration. Excellent techno groove for the floors here and a must have for those darker sets.

VAN CZAR & DANTIEZ SAUNDERSON featuring ANN SAUNDERSON – THE FORCE (BONZAI BASIKS) – VINYL + DIGITAL RELEASE

Our next Bonzai Basiks release – The Force – comes courtesy of a fantastic collaboration of artists featuring Belgian DJ and producer Van Czar, DJ and producer Dantiez Saunderson and UK songstress Ann Saunderson. Van continues to lead the way in deep techno grooves and his tracks are always powerful tools in the mix for many jocks. After he joined Dantiez on their back to back set at this year’s (2015) Legacy Festival, they decided to get together in the studio and soon after they started working on this fine cut. Over the last few years Dantiez has taken after his legendary father, Kevin Saunderson, and released quality cuts on several labels including Kevin’s own KMS. The guys then decided to employ the soulful, gospel-esque vocals of Dantiez’s mother, Ann. Back in 1992 Ann featured as backing vocals on the anthemic Pennies From Heaven by Inner City which was headed up by her husband Kevin, and went on to record several high profile tracks over the years. To keep it all in the family we get treated to a wonderful remix by the legend himself, Mr Kevin Saunderson who led the way in the early Detroit house and techno scene and gave the world some of the most memorable tunes ever with Inner City and others.

The Original Mix delivers a wonderfully upbeat techno vibe with massive sprinklings of cool house flavours. Big chunky kicks pair up with sharp claps and shuffling open hats while the rhythm gets a boost from a top notch, tight drum section. A rumbling bassline rattles through the sound as the vocal starts to come into play. Warm chords fade through and we settle into the groove nicely before we get blasted with amazing retro style piano chords and a transformed vocal that will have you up and on that floor for sure.

Kevin Saunderson’s remix goes straight for the jugular with a monster kick on the intro that pounds out a solid techno sound. Perfectly placed vocals litter the groove and keep with the darker elements of the track. A deep, growling bass comes through and takes control of the groove and is soon joined by scathing gritty synths that rise up from the murky depths and take the track deeper into techno. A definite must have track for the purists that will get any floor moving.

Van Czar turns up the heat with a double remix. First up is the Playa Den Bossa Mix which serves up a real nice treat filled deep grooving techno vibes that’s come straight out of those late night Ibiza sessions leaving you frazzled and fully partied up. Punchy kicks and crispy sharp hats dish out a solid rhythmic flow to the track as tight drum patterns are let loose. Swirling synth chords stand out beautifully as subtle chord stabs hold back waiting to pounce while a slicing higher pitched single note cuts through. Top notch stuff you do not want to miss.

We go deeper on Van’s second remix, the Gladiator Cysxe Remix which delivers a more punchy sound with a darker techno edge that stands out brilliantly with its powerful grooves and superb synths that range from swirling warm chord to classic stabby hits. Along the way we are introduced to a much harsher synth that carries a brilliant techno vibe. Another sure fire floor filler that will appeal to many no doubt.

VAN CZAR & DANTIEZ SAUNDERSON ft. ANN SAUNDERSON – THE FORCE (BONZAI VINYL) – PRE-SALE AVAILABLE NOW!

Our next vinyl release – The Force – comes courtesy of a fantastic collaboration of artists featuring Belgian DJ and producer Van Czar, DJ and producer Dantiez Saunderson and UK songstress Ann Saunderson.

A hypnotic percussion rides through the sound perfectly and becomes a big focus ass it tightens up the rhythm and digs deep into your imagination. A very minimal construction that carries a big punch with enough weight to destroy the floors, a must have.

Alea Jacta Est sets out with fading percussions that lead up to a phat kick and shuffling hat sequence. Cool vocal snippets ring out and bring character to the sound. The track gathers pace as the drums tighten up alongside a mysterious and mesmerizing note. Deep, tech fuelled chords rattle out a solid groove as those vocals become prominent working well with the noisy risers. The bass sits perfectly on the sound and allows the drums to do the work and deliver a solid rhythmic groove. Top notch stuff that will get attention no doubt.

Remove fades in with a tribalistic drum workout complete with a powerful punchy kick. A syncopated rhythmic structure takes shape that will definitely get the bootys on the floor.
