As the vinyl resurgence continues to gain momentum Piston Recordings head honcho Rogerio Martins has selected top quality cuts to make up the next vinyl release entitled ‘Ghetto Tales EP Volume 2′. Rogerio is joined by friends Miguel Reis, Carlo Caldareri and Yusuke Yamamoto as four stunning deep house slices are etched onto plastic so you can enjoy the analogue pleasure of putting the needle on the record. Undoubtedly the best way to listen to music, you will not be disappointed.
First up is Rogerio with his exclusive Taking It Back. As ever Rogerio continues to run a tight ship putting in the hours running the label, DJing, remixing and producing. Lots more to come through for 2014 so it’s worth keeping an eye on. The intro goes classic with a chunky kick and sharp hat combo along with a well crafted snare arrangement. The rhythms soon gather pace as a beautifully lush bass joins in. Groovy house keys add great depth to the sound while simple vocal samples sit back before being unleashed with a long release. The break brings forth a deeper sub bass that marries perfectly with those vocals before slamming back into the main groove. Top class stuff yet again from Portugal and a great addition to those “physical” record boxes.
Miguel Reis is up next with his Classic Motherfucker Record. Miguel Reis is a new moniker and is the very same artist with a multitude of releases under the alias of Mike Kings who has seen tracks on labels like Nervous Records, Stereo Productions, Kult Records, Session Trax, Fatal Music, Magna Recordings, and many more. The track intros with a nice mix of kicks and percs which set up a smooth rhythmic vibe, a deep, rasping vocal comes in with a very cool narrative which blends perfectly with the house beats. The track builds steadily as the vocal becomes a big focus before a truly deep and groovy bassline comes to the fore and injecting a funky flavour to the sound, top stuff.
Italian born DJ and producer Carlo Caldareri is back to Piston with this exclusive vinyl cut Not Before. Since he was young he always cultivated a passion for music, he spent the first years of his career looking into different genres of music. Soon he focused in on house music and his DJ sets began to take on house and deep house grooves. Carlo has worked with top artists and his tracks have appeared on many labels including Digital Traffik, Microtech Records and Mono Recordings to name just a few. Here the track intros with a cool percussion arrangement before classic styled kicks gets the sound locked into a solid groove. The bass rules from below as it cascades up through the sound, simple and effective short vocal samples add huge weight to the groove as the track takes us into a gritty workout complete with brass stabs. The break unleashes a brilliant Hip Hop styled vocal sample that leads us right back into this full on deep house monster groover.
Yusuke Yamamoto aka Freischwimmer delivers with his stunning Night Journey which is exclusive to this vinyl release. Yusuke is a contemporary house music producer and DJ currently based in Kyoto, Japan. His authentic sound remains universal and independent of trends and periods. He runs his own label Vacances Records and has seen release on many other labels including Oasi Lab, Houseworx, City Life, Ibiza House Hotspot and more. His last outing on Piston ‘Sun Shower EP’ was well received and is a testament to the eclectic nature of his style. A minimal sounding approach with a nicely clipped kick and percussion combo while a cool atmosphere is created in the background with great FX work. A simple yet highly effective bass joins the fray and soon transforms into a dominating force in the sound. Cool synth keys hypnotise and are joined by a much tougher synth riff that has a gritty edge. Throughout the sound a brilliant vocal sample keeps the groove flowing and continues through the break where a striking high pitched string comes in and leads us back into the swing of the main groove. Great stuff from Yusuke and definitely not to be missed.
Brighton based UK producer Kenny Keys debuts on Piston with wonderful Source and comes backed up with two quality remixes. Kenny has been delivering his faultless cuts for a few years now and his tracks have appeared on Massive Music, GND Records and Kompass Recordings. We’re delighted to have this guy on board and look forward to more in the future.
First up we have the Original Mix of Source which intros with a brilliant percussion driven groove alongside a punchy club kick. The rolling percs are tweaked to perfection and become a major player on the track. A fantastic deep sub bass bursts through with a cool plucky synth over the top which is replaced with a sublime sliding riff. Super tight arrangement that will be a big feature for many floors no doubt.
No introduction needed for Piston boss Rogerio Martins as he steps up with a superb remix. Beautifully tapered kicks pack a huge punch on the intro and throughout as the rolling percussions build us up to the main groove. The groove is intensified with a brilliant deep bass that has the power to move, this is coupled with a classy chord that filters in and out beautifully. Silky smooth female vocals give it the club feel making this an absolute gem of a track that will light up many floors this summer!
Italian DJ and producer Marcus Raute spends his time between Naples and Berlin where no doubt he draws from both cultures to refine his own sounds. Marcus is a player in the modern underground world where he dishes out his brand of all things House and Techno. Here he delivers a solid remix that intros with a chunky kick and cool, crispy hats and percussions. Deep chords rise up from the depths and blossom into a very cool, sliding riff before leaving the scene and letting those tight drums, pulsing basses and vocals do their work. The break reveals those chords once again and locks us in for the duration, superb stuff!

The legendary Rick Wade makes a welcome return to Piston with his ‘Zombie RP’ which comes backed up with a superb remix. Rick’s last outing ‘Night Flyer’ saw much support from all quarters and no doubt we will be seeing a lot more support with this latest offering.
We kick off with the Original Mix of the title track ‘Zombie RP’ which gets us moving with classic kick and hat intro. A fantastic big double bass soon takes over the sound as the grooves begin to shuffle along. A nice and warm piano finds its way in alongside a subtle stab and wispy FX. Superb stuff from Mr Wade and an absolute must for those late night groovy floors.
The head honcho at Piston, Rogerio Martins, lends his skills at the mixing desk with his Rotting Deep Remix of ‘Zombie RP’. Rogerio recently released his own ‘Gonna Be Mine’ on vinyl which is proving to be an increasingly popular choice of media in these days of technology. Here Rogerio gets things moving with a chunky kick and a superb array of hats and cymbals that give off a classy vibe. The bassline dominates the track beautifully as the main hook appears and takes us up to the break where deep chords being to rise before slamming us back into the groove, not to be missed!
‘Mighty’ is up next with a chunky intro filled with phat kicks and a cool percussion arrangement. Sweeping synths set the mood brilliantly and make way for a pulsating bassline that just rolls along the groove superbly. As the track evolves layers continue to build and result in a full flowing deep and funky house vibe. We get a few respites in the short breaks that occur before we are flung back into this relentless groove. Fantastic stuff and a track that will be a main feature in many sets for sure.
Piston Recordings label boss Rogério Martins is next up on his own well-established label with a new track that gets plenty of great remix treatment from Joss Moog, James Dexter and JR From Dallas.
Martins has steered his label through a dizzying amount of quality releases since 2007 picking up support from the likes of Laurent Garnier and John Acquaviva who have confirmed themselves as fans in the past and this new release is sure to find just as much favour with the top dogs.
‘Gonna Be Mine’ is the one Martins original and is a classical inclined bit of mature house music with sombre piano chords draped over nicely shuffling percussion. Subtle human sounds litter the arrangement and more lively stabs enter the fray in the latter half but essentially this is all about the warm and inviting groove.
Remixing first is Paris man Joss Moog, who has released on Robsoul and has a very uniquely musical approach to everything he does. Here he reworks the track into a bit of authentic old school disco with knotted basslines, plenty of vibrant and jangling percussion and warm chords. It’s a great rework and he also provides an exclusive digital only remix that is even more unhinged, funky and freewheeling.
Next up is young UK house talent James Dexter, who has appeared on plenty of great labels in this, his breakout year, and shows why he is so rated with this remix. It’s a stripped back and dubbed out, firmly rooted bit of house music for the heads with tough beats are and lush chords. Closing out the package is Gourmand Music boss and Chicago House purist, JR From Dallas. His Ghetto mix is suitably quick licked, dirty and sleazy, with plenty of abrasive percussive loops rattling along next to busy drums and various vocal sounds.
For house heads there can be few better labels than this, and Piston’s latest offering might just be its best yet.
