Greece based DJ and producer Savvas aka Savvas Karabinos debts on Piston with this sublime two tracker entitled ‘Cry Away’. Savvas was born in Chicago and found electronic music in the early nineties. Soon after he discovered the art of DJing and was soon playing all around town at the best clubs and open-air parties. His first production was released in 2000 on Klik Records with many more releases following on labels like Ready Mix Records, Itom Records and Kraak Records to name just a few.
‘Cray Away’ intros with wonderfully lush synth pads with a nice chunky kick and crisp hat combination. The bass soon raises its head and offers a truly deep groove which fills out the sound beautifully. Quality deep house keys make a showing alongside some cool vocal samples, the track whittles down to just the keys on the break creating a brilliant vibe in the process before getting right back into this full on deep ride, great stuff.
‘Vice Versa’ sets off with smooth kicks and flowing percussions. A deep and lush chord takes over the sound as a low bass rides along the rhythm. Vocal samples add a cool vibe with perfectly placed synth keys weighing in. Many different instruments show up in this ever evolving sound which makes this a must for any box.
Martins has steered his label through a dizzying amount of quality releases since 2007 picking up support from the likes of Laurent Garnier and John Aquaviva who have confirmed themselves as fans in the past and this new release is sure to find just as much favour with the top dogs.
‘Gonna Be Mine’ is the one Martins original and is a classical inclined bit of mature house music with sombre piano chords draped over nicely shuffling percussion. Subtle human sounds litter the arrangement and more lively stabs enter the fray in the latter half but essentially this is all about the warm and inviting groove.
Remixing first is Paris man Joss Moog, who has released on Robsoul and has a very uniquely musical approach to everything he does. Here he reworks the track into a bit of authentic old school disco with knotted basslines, plenty of vibrant and jangling percussion and warm chords. It’s a great rework and he also provides an exclusive digital only remix that is even more unhinged, funky and freewheeling.
Next up is young UK house talent James Dexter, who has appeared on plenty of great labels in this, his breakout year, and shows why he is so rated with this remix. It’s a stripped back and dubbed out, firmly rooted bit of house music for the heads with tough beats are and lush chords. Closing out the package is Gourmand Music boss and Chicago House purist, JR From Dallas. His Ghetto mix is suitably quick licked, dirty and sleazy, with plenty of abrasive percussive loops rattling along next to busy drums and various vocal sounds.
For house heads there can be few better labels than this, and Piston’s latest offering might just be its best yet.
Early support from Fish Go Deep (Innervisions, Defected), Miguel Campbell (Hot Creations, Outcross, MAM), UGLH (Witty Tunes, Plastic City, Get Physical Music), Tensnake (Defected, Rush Hour, Get Physical Music), Moodtrap (Tsuba), Joyce Muniz (2020 Vision, Exploited, Snatch!), Claudio Coccoluto, Ekkohaus (2020 Vision, Morris Audio, Cargo Edition, Liebe Detail), GIOM (Ornate Music, Lost My Dog, Phobic), X-Press 2, Kirby (Lost My Dog, Loco Records, Nordic Trax), Matias Zeque (Akbal Music), Jakobin & Domino (Large, Luv Shack), Ricardo Miranda (Rush Hour), Marcus Sur (MBF LTD, Noir, RESOPAL), Mark Knight (Toolroom, Ministry of Sound), Steve Mac, Black Loops (Toy Tonics, Gruvv), Moliner (Depaart, Gimmick Records) and more!

The arrangement is spot on as the sounds blend effortlessly creating a stunning deep house experience. A classic vocal sample is the icing on the cake and will put this track on a lot of playlists no doubt, simply amazing track here and not to be missed!

First up we have the delectable ‘Pie’, solid kicks get the groove flowing before a wonderfully deep bass blasts through. The percussion do a great job on firing up the rhythm as the track takes us deeper into darker shades of house music. A very subtle synth floats in the background but it’s the mesmerizing bass that does the trick here, superb stuff.

Nice and chunky kicks form the intro alongside sharp hats before an infectious bass drives the track forward. Stunning piece of work here as the hypnotic grooves grab hold of your senses. Mend has been into music from a very early age and has performed all across Europe at various events. Firstly we have the title track, ‘Metroplex’ which goes straight to the deeper side from the off with a wonderful well rounded kick and percussion combo. A deep bass rises from the depths to captivate the sound and settles in for a hell of a ride. Some quality FX add texture to the sound and very cool synth work sits well alongside the odd chord, sublime stuff!
‘After On The Roof’ keeps well within the realms of deep house goodness as on the intro a brilliant synth drone sits behind a cool kick and percussion arrangement. The bass soon follows and gives the track a new depth with hypnotic qualities. Subtle FX ease their way through giving the impression of a vocal sample which is very cool indeed. Top notch stuff!
‘Watergate’ sets the grooves flowing with a very cool intro including some retro styled percussions. The bassline fires up the track to perfection as it cascades through the sound. Cool vocal samples and simple one hit synths in just the right amounts add textures to the sound. Wonderful deep house vibes here, not to be missed.
Portuguese deep vibes guru Jose Reis aka Accatone joins forces with Italian DJ and producer Giuseppe D’Alessandro aka Kisk on Piston’s first release of 2014, ‘Back In Time’. Jose remains busy as ever with remix duties and original works, his latest release came via Hudd Traxx, “A Reason Not To Try” with a awesome Matthew Herbert remix . Guiseppe is making his Piston debut while he runs his own label Apparel Music which is based in the UK. He has seen a very impressive release list across many labels and his style varies with lots of diversity.
Accatone’s mix of ‘Back In Time’ delivers a solid deep house groove with cool chords and a sublime grooving bassline. The intro boasts a nice warm kick with a raspy vocal which leads into a flowing rhythm as the subtle percussions take hold. The bassline and the vocals are the main focus as the track delves deeper in the house sound. An excellent cut that will no doubt grace many a set!.
Kisk’s mix dishes out a deeper house cut with a superbly subtle intro of just low end kicks and an earthy type pad.
