Miika Kuisma’s track Returning Home from his Progress Of The Soul album was licensed for use on Baldessarini’s website.

Miika Kuisma is a finnish musician, artist, philosopher, futurist and inventor who’s passion is to understand fundamental nature of the reality by exploring spirituality, science, history and technology.

In early 90′s he got big revelation in a small house club and walked out as a new person. From that moment he knew dance music was ‘for him’. His first electronic records which influenced him the most include works by Jarre, Cosmic Baby, Moby, Prodigy, Faithless and early Eye-Q releases. After falling in love with so many electronic styles by now, also his own productions have become somewhat unpredictable.

His tracks are usually somewhere between progressive and melodic, while not being not ‘too deep’ or ‘too cheesy’. On the DJ’ing side Miika was known for his perfectionistic approach to build his sets in certain way. Especially his “Intelligent Design” radio mixes were trips across different moods and genres.

Miika has spent most of his life playing around with technical gear but also loved to draw and play instruments from very early age. After getting his degree in electricity he turned around and took career paths in graphic design, programming, animation and user-interface design.

Besides music production and performances he played key role in the concept and interface-design with EKS in the development of the MIDI controller EKS Otus. He played his last DJ gig in April of 2009, sold his record label “Subtraxx Recordings” for Bonzai Music and relocated into South-East Asia. Currently he is involved in designing new types of creative applications, media formats and business models.

70 miles left of the mainstream and perhaps 10,000 geographical miles away from any major trance music hub sits Miika Kuisma. His biography says he lives “in South East Asia” (no greater elaboration given) and describes him as a “Finnish musician, artist, philosopher, futurist and inventor” with a passion for “exploring spirituality, science, history and technology”. Fair enough.

We first came across Miika via his nicely bubbling Subtraxx label some 3 years ago. The same Subtraxx label he sold back in 2009, jacking in any semblance of a nine to five, before heading out Asia way to produce. If you’re going to do spiritualism, that really must constitute doing it properly! Alongside that info-nugget we were mildly stunned to find out that he’s just completed the third in a of three album trilogy arc. So we thought it was high time we got our heads in that game and took a look & listen.

‘Progress of Soul’ is a fascinating, engrossing wander through the outer reaches of progressive house, ambient, chillout and deep (and we do mean deeeeeep!) trance. Unencumbered by the confines of 80 minute CDs, it’s a 1hr33min kaleidoscopic, transcendental (yes, that adjective was always going to be here somewhere) trip.

Fellow Fins Tab, Luke Chen and others are to be found collaborating across the 14 tracks and the deep, pulsating bass that populates large swathes of the album owes much to early Moby, Cosmic Baby & Jean-Michel Jarre material. The album’s mixed edition is out now, with the full length versions following on the 7th of December. Early in the New Year, ‘Progress of Soul’ will be joined by the first two LPs (which includes ‘Trying My New Wings’ – Beatport’s second best selling chillout track of 2008) to form one gargantuan triple release. In the meantime, check ‘Progress of Soul’ out. It’ll change your life, swear to god!

Miika Kuisma’s 3rd artist album Progress of Soul is the end of a trilogy and picks up where his previous album Sententia finished. The album features some of the key collaborators from Miika’s career including DJ Tab, Luke Chen, Mr.A and OlliS.

After relocating to South-East Asia, Miika was forced back to bedroom production after working almost a decade in a studio environment. This album was mostly created with basic laptop, DJ headphones, internal Logic Pro synths and some freeware plugins. As being a digital only release also the limitations of the CD format have been ignored resulting a record that is 1h 33m in length.

On this album Miika covers a wide range of styles mixing different genres together. You can hear influence from ambient, chill-out, progressive house, trance, techno and minimal. The album will be released on Tuesday the 28th of September 2010 on all digital download portals, available worldwide.

Miika Kuisma is also the founder of our Subtraxx label which brings high quality progressive trance music to the public.
