Influenced mainly by the techno genre, Daniel had the opportunity to meet artists like+John Creamer, 16 Bit Lolitas, Tocadisco, Fatboy Slim, John Acquaviva, Trentemoller, Tiga, Loco Dice, Guy J etc. Today his style is a mixture of techno, house and progressive, and he plans to continue to evolve his sound and style.

STAN KOLEV – FORSAKEN EP (BONZAI PROGRESSIVE)

Having appeared on several of our compilations over the years, Stan Kolev marks his full Bonzai Progressive debut with the superb three tracker Forsaken EP. Since 2005 this guy has been dishing out top quality cuts on many top labels. Everything from progressive house, deep house and tech house has been covered. In recent times he has shown up on our own compilations including Club Traxx – Progressive House 13, 15 and 16. No doubt we’ll be seeing more from this guy in the future.

Forsaken is up first and comes in two flavours, the Original Mix and the Instrumental. Both offer up a solid slice of techno with the Instrumental made available or those that want to lose the sparse vocals. Right from the off you find yourself locked into a powerful techno groove that is made up of thumping kicks, bright hats and a superb deep and lush bassline that drives the groove beautifully. In the background a series of almost industrialised clangy FX set the tone and deliver a tough edge to the sound. The sinister vocal adds cool texture to the sound and works perfectly against the backdrop of a stunning techno groove. Simply awesome.

Mauve intros with a cool stuttering bass sound alongside a subdued kick drum with crisp hats and sharp claps riding alongside. Percussive layers start to build and a solid rhythm ensues as the kick drum gets beefed up into a powerful pounding punch. Cool FX fill in the spaces and create a colourful multi layered sound with a super tight arrangement. Sweeping vocal sounds make their presence know from time to time as we are drawn deeper into the groove. A somewhat minimalist approach to progressive that will most definitely beef up any set, no doubt.

DANIELE CUROTTO – DECK OF CARDS EP (BONZAI PROGRESSIVE)

Argentinean DJ and producer Daniel Curotto marks his Bonzai Progressive debut with a very impressive three track EP entitled Deck Of Cards. It was shortly after a trip to Europe that Daniel first decided he wanted to get into music, in particular DJing. After a few years of playing in and around Mar del Plata he decided to create his own music. He started to practice with Subiela Francisco Fernandez who not only taught him about bass or drums, he also taught about emotion in music.

Up first we have Deck Of Cards which delivers a mixed bag of tech house meets progressive resulting in some explosive dancefloor friendly moments. A tight drum arrangement, complete with a solid punchy kick drum and bright hats amidst a myriad of percussions, keeps the rhythms in check as ultra cool synths and chords work their magic. The track does have a dark tone that will light up any floor. A hypnotic bass mesmerizes while sporadic chord stabs beefs up the groove. Top notch stuff here that you will not want to miss.

Inspiring Clones delivers an eclectic look at deep, groovy vibes with a progressive twist that works beautifully to create a solid groove to give any set a boost. Expertly arranged beats sit over a superb deep bassline that settles into a steady flowing rhythmic groove. Up top we have a very cool vocal that inspires an Ethnic trait through the track while that bassline probes with its deep boring tentacles. Surreal in parts, this one will get the imagination running wild.

Mild Rise is a big progressive hitter that will no doubt find its way into many late night sessions with its deep and dark tones. The intro boasts a cacophony of sound with swirling pads merging with cool FX and subtle percussions that slowly build into a solid beat that delivers cool rhythms to work that booty to. A punchy kick drum bursts through alongside a brilliant chugging bassline that provides the foundation for a fantastic ride. The break throws up a surreal sequence filled with those relentless pads and a very cool vocal that captivates. A perfectly trippy slice of prog that is not to be missed.

AUDIO NOIR – FROM LONDON TO MOSCOW – REMIXES (BONZAI PROGRESSIVE)

Almost 8 months on from the release of his album Artificial Star, Australia’s Audio Noir sets out his stall once more and invites four top quality remixers to do their thing with his track From London To Moscow. The original version delivered a solid progressive house groove and we’ve no doubt that these four remixes will do that justice. Vince Aoun is up first on remix duties with his unique twist on the original. Lebanese DJ and producer Vince was last seen round these parts back in November 2015 with his Bonzai Progressive debut Lilium. Since then he has seen his work released on Vandit Records and Melodika Music as well as appearances on our WMC 2016 compilation and Afterhour Trax 19 on Green Martian. The remix opens with a muted kick drum that is cloaked by some crispy bright hats. The beat dissipates to reveal a warm lush bass tone as a cool arp rises up. Sultry vocals ring out and suddenly we’re lashed with a monstrous breaks pattern complete with a powerful kick and snappy snares. The drums are super tight here and will certainly cause a commotion on the floors. As we get lost in the breaks and 80’2 styled rolls a delicious acid riff courses through the sound alongside gritty basses. Top notch stuff from Vince that you do not want to miss.

Quantus aka Volkan Erman & Dimi Douglas returns to the remix desk with another of his top notch efforts. Last time out we got a dosing of his superb talents on remix duty for Nico Parisi’s Raklet before teaming up with Findike on Deep Connection. On the remix we get a taste of the sheer quality coming out of this guys studio. A classic punchy kick and hi hat combi graces the intro alongside hypnotic percussions that set up a flowing rhythm. Cool vocals are scattered throughout and deliver a mysterious edge to the sound. Deep droning basses carry the groove nicely and are accompanied by dirty synths and basses. The break reveals a more melodic side to the sound as a soothing vocal rings out complete with superb FX bringing some very cool textures into the groove. A definite must have track that will delight any set.

Blufeld is up next on the remix with his Long Distance Rework and once again we see why this guy remains a firm favourite. Since September 2015 when we saw his last cut, this guy remained very busy indeed in the studio. After a few remixes he teamed up with Platunoff to deliver Tiefe Gedanken which quickly gathered pace and saw great support from across the board. Always an exciting time when this guy drops by and no doubt there will be much more to come. The remix intros with some very cool FX that fade away to reveal a powerful kickdrum and rattling bass combi as bright open hats feed through. The stuttering synths create a superbly colourful melody that grabs a hold of you and carries you along for the ride. As the layers build we find more and more melodics creep in to the sound resulting in a very impressive progressive groove. On the break we are transported back in time with a wonderful gated synth that dishes out a mesmerizing pattern before we are slammed right back into full on mode. A simply stunning slice of prog that will be at the top of many sets no doubt.

Ruslan Vashkevich rounds up this impressive remix pack with a superb chill remix. Taking a bit of a side step from his usual progressive vibes, Ruslan enters the world of chill and does so with a flurry of panache and surrealism. His last outing – Perfect Choice saw support from a lot of top jocks and we’ve no doubt that this side step into chilldom will follow suit. The remix opens with a fading in, haunting sound that opens up into an expertly layered pad. Deeper elements make their way into the soundscape as various FX add colour to the sound. A surreal arp cascades up and down creating a sublime space type vibe. Intermittent bass drops raise the intensity as those arps dominate the sound before fading away to reveal a cacophony of bells that play us out. A wonderfully creative piece that will give your imagination something to think about.

ZRG – FORGET THE PAST (BONZAI PROGRESSIVE)

ZRG debuts on Bonzai Progressive with the superb Forget The Past which includes a fantastic remix from Chris Drifter. This guy has been churning out quality vibes since 2007 with a mixture of progressive and tech house. He has shown up on labels such as Egothermia, Krata and his own ZRG. On the remix we find Chris Drifter delivering the goods, and these two are no strangers having worked together on various collabs over the years.

The Original Mix intros with a distinctly crispy hi hat and snappy percussion combi before a monster kick drum come through and takes full control alongside a superb deep bassline. The percussions continue to layer up forming into a solid rhythmic flow as the bass is joined by a more probing, chugging sibling. Throughout the track a series of short breaks steadily introduce a rising pad the goes on to mesmerize with its captivating tones. A super slick slice of tech house that will definitely turn a few heads.

Next up we have the Chris Drifter Remix which takes us down a more cultured progressive route. Right from the off we find ourselves locked on as punchy kicks and crispy hats combine alongside a chugging bassline. A melodic sequence slowly fades in and teases us with its enchanting siren like qualities. At the break the bass is filtered allowing a very cool drum pattern to form up before slamming right back into full on mode. A powerful driving progressive cut that will be a welcome addition in any set.

BLUFELD & PLATUNOFF – TIEFE GEDANKEN (BONZAI PROGRESSIVE)

Russian DJ and producer Igor Platunoff also returns with a quality remix and his last outing was on remix duties for Blufeld’s Out Of This Life. Great to see both of these diverse artists back at the helm and we hope they collaborate more in the future.

The Original Mix opens with a smooth almost dreamy sequence complete with swirling pads and playful melodics alongside a building percussion arrangement. A subtle bass appears and steers the track toward the deeper side before superb punchy kick drums come in. The track settles into a solid prog groove that becomes filled with subtle melodies and cool FX. The bass is a truly hypnotic experience that is enhanced by those tight drums, this one is a definite must have for those late night sessions.

Nico Parisi returns with a top quality remix which comes fresh off the back of his recent remix of Thorin’s Dreaming of A Better World which appeared on the massive Bonzai & Friends – 500 (Remixes). No doubt we’ll be seeing more in the coming months from this hugely talented artist, so stay tuned. On the remix Nico opens with a punchy kick drum with a subtle synth arp chasing in the background. Percussions start to form up and we soon find ourselves drawn to the groove. The progressive vibes on offer really shine through as a deep droning bass takes over the low end while up top a myriad of melodies take charge and steer the track in a hypnotic direction. A real nice slice of prog here that is not to be missed.

The ever impressive Alex Vidal steps up to remix duties and delivers another one of his sublime progressive cuts. His last outing for BP was also on remix duties, this time on LoQuai’s Numans Prayer on Bonzai & Friends – 500 (Remixed). Much more to come from this guy in the future, well worth keeping an eye and an ear on. Alex’s remix intros with a punchy kick drum that sits over a dreamy pad sequence complete with swirling FX and subtle melodies. A deep, probing bassline fades in and soon takes control of the groove as it drives the track forward. Cool spacey vibes ooze out of the sound as the intensity rises. On the break we get drawn deeper into the vibe with a series of melodic pads and a tight percussion keep us going before getting slammed right back into full on mode. One for the deeper darker progressive sets here that will not disappoint.

PHI PHI INTERVIEW

Veteran DJ and producer Philippe Toutlemonde aka Phi Phi has been churning out quality vibes since the mid 80’s with projects like Dobel You, Honey C, The Gaps, Extreme Trax and the famous Quadran, most of which he produced alongside the late great Philippe Van Mullem. Over these years Phi Phi’s attention was mainly on progressive and trance, and he still leans in that direction to this day. He has had countless residencies and club and festival appearances and is regarded with legendary status amongst his peers. We sat down with Philippe to get the low down on his forthcoming new single – Breaking Danger, and we also dropped in a few other questions to get a look at the man behind the music.

BP: Hi Philippe, thanks for chatting with us, how are things with you at the moment?

PT: I’m going well, thx. I’m spending a lot of time in the studio on new tracks, and working full time doing promo for forthcoming releases. I’m also working on a compilation for Bonzai Progressive.

BP: How did you first get involved with DJing and producing?

PT: I started to mix back in 1985, I played some Italo Disco and New Wave, it was the beginning of in tempo mixing or beat matching. I got started in underground clubs and held a residency with Johan in At The Villa in 1987, all this was happening during the rise of the New Beat era. Soon after I got residencies at Boccaccio Life, Extreme, Fuse and Café d’Anvers etc…
In 1987 I met Philippe Van Mullem and we started producing together as Dobel You, soon we had our first release with Mammy. We were then contacted by Jean Vanloo and Patrick Hernandez who wanted to produce us and that’s where it all started. There have been many different projects since including Una, Honey C, Innertales, Quadran with PVM and Phi Phi & Greg D with Gregory Dewindt. Other collaborations have followed through the years.

BP: You’ve been around the dance music scene for a great number of years and seen many changes. What’s your take on today’s scene and how have you been able to stay at the top of your game?

PT: If you talk about the European scene, it is amusing to note the shifting of influences, of creative places, London yesterday, Berlin today and Paris seems to always come back, this is very interesting. Since I started, I’ve always been attracted to new sounds, new vibrations. There are so many rich and varied sounds to listen to, beyond the Retro tracks. New and underground sounds are so much more exciting to explore. That’s why my project is named ‘Mouvement Perpétuel’, it’s like the underground, always moving. Ok, lots of people know me as a pioneer DJ, my appearances in Retro events puts the emphasis on me for that. I’d say that one key thing is to always trying to find unexpected and sharp music. It’s like a quest, searching for hidden treasures. I did it before and I still do it today! A DJ must give people something they won’t expect and I’ve always tried to do that since my debut up to today. Few know me for my underground side and I invite people to listen to my current sets. On my website – djphiphi.com – we work to separate Retro mixes from New mixes. Passion for music and public reaction motivates me, I like each moment spent behind the decks as if it’s the first time. In particular when the crowd shouts when I play an unknown track, something happens between us, I’ve completed my mission!

BP: Your residencies over the years have included some top venues like Extreme and At The Villa, which would you consider to be your favourite venue and why?

PT: At The Villa was the first. Boccaccio was the biggest one and Extreme was where I played for 7 years, they were all magical. We were at the birth of a scene that became a real culture in just a few years. Being a resident gives the opportunity to offer long sets that tell stories and take people on a journey. I’m a storyteller, I’d really like to do it again, which is the reason why we’ve created the Mouvement Perpétuel project with no more than 4 DJ’s at each event.

BP: So your new single Breaking Danger (awesome track by the way) features a really cool monologue from Mr. Heisenberg, we’re guessing you’re a big fan of Breaking Bad, right? How did you end up using that particular reference to the show?

PT: Thank you! But a fan of Breaking Bad? not really, sorry. I’m not a big fan of TV shows, not enough time. I thought the monologue was interesting enough to use it like that, going into the bridge.

BP: The track feels complex in its structure and arrangement with so many layers, how long did you work on this one and what was the inspiration that brought you to create it?

PT: Yes it’s a rich track. I like when sounds are complex and twinkling. The first version was made in two days. It was reworked later after a try on the dance floor. In particular some arrangements to make the sound stronger.

BP: Have you played this one out yet? What reaction has it got?

PT: I played it on the intro of my set at Tomorrowland, I was very pleasantly surprised by the public reaction, absolutely crazy.

BP: In general, your tracks always seem to have a unique quality that is instantly recognisable as a Phi Phi piece of work. What’s your secret when it comes to putting this quality into sound?

PT: This is exactly the goal, give an identity to each track. Be exigent and don’t hesitate to spend time on details, work the spectrum of each sound in order not to overlap the frequencies and mix them perfectly. A well balanced mix is required to get an optimal sound.

BP: You’ve worked with so many brilliant producers over the years and continue to do so. Do you have any favourite collaborations?

PT: It’s not easy to give a preference over one composer or producer over the other. All are talented, but each with a different feeling. I will always have a top spot for Philippe Van Mullen who passed away last year and who was my friend for 25 years.

BP: What would you consider to be your best work, and why?

PT: For the sound quality, I think Breaking Danger, it’s one of the most finished and the more recent of my tracks. During the last 25-30 years, each track produced corresponds to its time. For the rest it’s not for me to judge but it’s to the public to do so. It’s a question of emotion.

BP: You’ve been connected with the Bonzai crew from the early 90’s, how did you guys get together?

PT: In 1994-95 – when I was resident DJ at Extreme (Affligem) – Fly, the boss of Bonzai came to me and asked me to sign with Bonzai in a new division created especially for us (Philippe Van Mullem and I) and the trancey sounds we played at that moment in time. Bonzai Trance Progressive was the label and I’ve released so many tracks since then as Quadran, Phi Phi & Greg D etc. Today the label is rebranded as Bonzai Progressive.

BP: What do you like to do in your time away from music?

PT: I like to spend time with my family and caring for my daughter among other things. I also enjoy gardening, being in the quietness of the nature.

BP: Well Philippe thanks so much for talking with us it’s been a pleasure, take care.

PT: Thank you, the pleasure is mine also. Hope to see you soon, at my next event maybe.
