Piston Recordings PR2017298 20 March, 2017

Monotronik are Portuguese DJ and producer duo Freddy Lourenzo and D’Joseph Alves and they return to Piston Recordings with the superb Subculture. Their last outing here was their debut Divergence, back in early Summer 2016, was very well received indeed having landed on many charts and playlists. The pair DJ regularly all over the place and are known for their tight, groovy sets. They’ve put out several top quality cuts recently on Underground Source Records and Sync Forward, moving between tech house and deep house. Great to see them back once again, well worth keeping an eye on.

Subculture intros with a cool muted kick drum and crispy hi hat combi before the drums get a boost of phatness that get us heading to the floors. Rhythmic percussions soon join the fun as a probing bassline weaves through the track. A short break reveals some very cool clubby vocals that blend effortlessly into the tech house groove on display. Stabbing synths with a gritty texture are the icing on the cake here making this a definite must have for the lively floors out there.

Watching sets off with a cool percussion led arrangement before a nice and chunky kick drum bursts into play. This is joined by an in-your-face bassline that works its way into every orifice of the groove and filling the low end with its warm tones. Cool vocals litter the sound as filtering synth stabs bring out the tech goodness. The break throws up a superb sequence filled with swirling pads and erratic synths before the beats return for the duration. Top notch stuff that is not to be missed.
