SECONDS – THE BASS (BONZAI PROGRESSIVE)

Based out of Mexico City, Maria Letona and Ivan Lopez-Arechiga aka Seconds mark their Bonzai debut with the floor shaking The Bass. With a couple of releases throughout their career, this relatively new project has been able to earn a solid spot in the local Mexican scene as DJ’s and also as producers. Since 2012 they have raised their profile as DJ’s and have been sharing the stage with artists like Aeroplane, Fred Falke, Philip Gorbachev, Chrome Sparks and others. Their tracks have seen releases on labels like Noiselab Records and Sicario Music. Lots more to come from this exciting duo and we’re delighted to have them on board.

First up we have Dippin’ My which offers a dark cinematic intro with swelling pads before a nice and punchy kick come through. Those pads really set the scene for a dark progressive groove as they ebb and flow across the sound. Tight drums layer up and the rhythm gets moving before we get right into the heart of the sound. The pads fade away and the bass line takes full control of the groove with a pulsating power that dominates. Superb retro style vocals are brought in and stand out perfectly. The break brings those pads back alongside some cool synths and vocals as a riser takes us to the climax and back into full swing. A monster tune here that will be a killer on the floors for sure.

To The Bass is up next and comes in two flavours, the first being the Vocal Mix. A bas heavy sound is evident right from the off as a throbbing low end sub bass reverberates through the sound as chunky kicks, shuffling hats and cool synths are layered up. The lead sound filters beautifully around the track and offers a big focus point. A superb spoken vocal comes in and gives the track a boost as that bass line rattles along. The Dub Version removes the vocal if that’s your bag and offers the same deep progressive grooves as before. Top notch stuff that will be a must have tool in your box.

Ha Llegado El Dia intros with a big and brash persona as chunky kicks and banging snappy snares make the sound stand out. In the background we get a sweeping bass drone that fills the scene brilliantly with short filtered edges. the bass line proper delivers a solid workout that drives the track on and is soon joined by a cool Spanish vocal. A deep and dark groove ensues before the track breaks and reveals a bright piano melody which crops up throughout offering a respite. Surreal melodic phrases float across the sound with a subtlety that keeps the track firmly rooted in the darker recesses. Excellent stuff that will surely find its way into a late night session.

AUDIOSTORM – FIRST STEP (BONZAI PROGRESSIVE)

The ever impressive AudioStorm aka Ognjen Vukovic delivers his superb debut album – First Step which takes us on a wonderful journey into progressive sounds filled with melody and deep grooves. Podgorica, Montenegro based producer AudioStorm was fascinated by music from an early age and listened to many different bands including Pink Floyd, Joy Division, Depeche Mode and The Cure. During the 90’s he turned his attention to electronic dance music and began listening to a lot of progressive sounds from the likes of Deep Dish, Darren Emerson, John Digweed and Sasha to name just a few. Over the years this guy has proven hugely popular with releases on many top labels including Baroque, Mistique Music, Balkan Connection, OLD SQL and many more. His Bonzai relationship began with Oblivion EP which was quickly followed up by the very well received Seismic Activity. His sound is definitely reaching far and wide and he consistently rides high on various charts. We are delighted to present his first studio album and we have no doubt it will shake things up.

The album kicks off with a fine slice of melodic progressive house, Day in Penthouse gets into a nice smooth flow with chunky kicks and a rhythmic drum arrangement that leads up to a cool dancey bass line that has a rich warmth. Cascading synths and strings stutter across the sound as we approach a real cool melodic structure. The perfect opener to whet the appetite.

Supernatural delivers another cool melody driven yet slightly deeper progressive vibe. A solid groove is crafted with a tight drum section that sends out fine flowing rhythms alongside a chugging bass line that will definitely get the floors moving. The break brings in more melodic flavours delivering a magical setting before we head back into the main track for the duration.

Moon Safari takes a serious look at progressive house and the qualities shine through in this construction. A strong and solid beat carries us through the intro and reveals a fantastic bubbling bass line that dominates the groove. Percussive layers form up and keep a steady rhythm as cool synths start to fade through alongside some swirling atmospheric pads. A top notch cut that will be a go to tool in any set.

Hidden Door intros with a nice punchy kick and a subtle percussion that lies in the distance. Sweeping synth pads float across the sound in a teasing manner before a powerful pulsating bas shows up to take full control. Shimmering arps ride along the solid deep grooves of the track as we get totally hypnotised by the cacophony of sounds. A wonderful display of prog house that will definitely give any floor the gift of many dancing feet.

At the midway point of the album we are hit with a double header in Warm & Loud which comes in Day and Night mixes. As you’d expect AudioStorm pulls out all the stops once again as he takes us through a master class in constructing melodies and building grooves. The Day Mix has all of the above in abundance, the big hitter on this one are those intricate synth patterns that weave out a solid core of sound. The Night Mix ramps up the pace with a much more club friendly and deeper groove. We still get all the goodness of those superb melodies and a super tight drum arrangement but done in a way that puts the spotlight on the dancey elements from within the deep progressive groove. Take your pick with these ones, each one is a sure fire winner.

Crazy World intros with a punchy kick and slow, deep rooted bass that reverberates beautifully through the sound, cutting through those kicks with ease. Crispy sharp hi-hats start the percussion section off which layers up to become a super tight rhythmic section. Cool chords are scattered throughout the track alongside some expertly crafted sweeping FX. A classic styled 303 acid line fades in and becomes the big focus for the track and compliments the musical elements perfectly. Top notch stuff that will definitely be a favourite among many.

No Gravitation delivers a solid workout filled with deep progressive grooves that suck you in. At the forefront we have a distinctive bass sound that really hooks you in with its probing power. Smooth, rhythmic percussions and drums keep the track on course as the layers continue to build while quirky acid lines form up. Brilliant stuff that will turn a few heads for sure.

Rounding off the album we are presented with the outro Titanium which glitches into creation with an electrifying sound as beautiful, rich voices fade up. In contrast to those voices a sharp edged bass powers into the sound to come up against the softer sounds with a harder edge. What a perfect way to end this album than with a showcase of sublime sounds that bring out a real musical side to the artists performance. This album is not to be missed.

PHI PHI – HICCUP (BONZAI PROGRESSIVE)

We’re delighted to present yet another Phi Phi progressive trip, this time around we get locked on to the sounds of Hiccup which comes backed up with a fantastic remix. Phi Phi’s last outing – Alone, scored very well indeed and gained top spots on many charts. DJ-ing still plays a huge part in this guys career and you never have to wait too long until his next gig. Hiccup intros with a tough kick that packs a nice big punch and carries a cool click on the top end. In the background a cacophony of percussions are let loose and help create a solid platform for the track. Dark, sinister vocals ring out and lead us up to the first short break before the track gets into full on mode with a strong probing offset bass line. That bass line really gets the groove into full swing alongside those expertly crafted drum patterns. The main break throws up a rich string that contrasts beautifully with the sinister vocal sound. A proper progressive monster that will definitely hit any floor hard.

Rise And Fall aka Russian based DJ and producer Anton Vishniakov turn up for remix duties and once again we are treated to some first class sounds from this guy. So far, along with his other persona Templ8, he has currently released tracks on labels like Bonzai Progressive, Monster Deep, Flux Delux (Recover), Clear Water Music, Pitch Music, Alien Technology, Aoses Recordings, Alien Technology Recordings, Green Martian and the mighty JOOF Recordings. Specialising in deep and techy high quality sound along with energetic and atmospheric grooves there can be no doubt that Anton will continue to garner huge support for a long time to come. This remix certainly gears towards his more energetic side with a driving bass line that forces your feet to move. A solid construction filled with punchy kicks and a tight drum section is the perfect fodder for the floors. On top of the bass we get a nice round of synths and FX that light up the groove beautifully. A simply stunning slice of progressive grooves you simply must have.

MENDEXX – DECEPTIVE MINDS (BONZAI PROGRESSIVE)

The impressive Glaswegian DJ and producer Mendexx returns with Deceptive Minds. We last got a glimpse of this guy’s talents on remix duty for Wild Guess’ Trysal 35 on Green Martian back in March 2015, as well as several appearances on various compilations. The Original mix settles into a solid progressive groove right from the off thanks to those punchy kicks and that deep pulsating bass line. Swirling FX cascade throughout the sound as striking synth keys cut through the low end frequencies. The break delivers more of those cool pads and FX before leading us back into the main groove for the duration. A simply fantastic slice of prog here that you will not want to miss.

Paul Kardos steps up to the plate with this superb remix that really goes deep into the progressive abyss. Hungarian producer Paul is fresh off the back of his last Bonzai outing – The Workout Song which was very well received indeed. No doubt we will be seeing much more from this guy in the near future so stay tuned. The remix intros with a real sense of depth as muffled kick are joined by a probing bass that lurks menacingly alongside a rising percussion arrangement. The track breaks loose as the kicks get beefed up to deliver a solid punch while that bass meanders through the sound. Cool vocals pop up and add fantastic textures to the groove and keep with the deepness of the sound beautifully. A real solid progressive mover here.

Altek is up next for remix duties and once again shows off his talents in style. Fresh from his 2nd Chance EP over at Green Martian, this guy really know how to turn on the progressive vibes. Here he delivers a superb progressive workout that hits the sweet spot right from the off as distant voices provide the backdrop to a tight drum arrangement alongside a deep rolling bass line. Cool synths find their way through the low end sounds to give off a sharp contrasting groove that will definitely keep the floors occupied. Big noisy FX and spiralling sweeps litter the track and add a real cool texture to the sound. Spacey, hypnotic grooves that are a definite must have.
