2TAN – SOUTH OF HEAVEN EP (ELEMENTS RECORDS)

Portuguese producer 2tan returns to Elements Records with the stunning ‘South Of Heaven EP’. His last outing ‘Aokigahara’ proved popular among the deep and dark fraternity and there can be no doubt we are in for a real treat here again.

Kicking us off is the original mix of ‘1st Circle’ which intros with a darkly theme and sets the mood beautifully for this ride. A deep bass drone encapsulates the sound while all around we have very cool FX the ebb and flow throughout. Just when you think that sub bass will fade out it comes back and keeps hold. A very smooth arrangement on the drums and percussions, quite subtle, nicely padded kicks and basic hat patterns make for a smooth ride. The break releases more of that bass and then suddenly an infectious plucky bass crops up transforming the vibe brilliantly. Awesome stuff!

Next up is the original mix of ‘6th Circle’. The track comes at us with a tough layered kick and a deep sub bass coming up from below. Brilliantly arranged FX work provide a big focus to the track but this is secondary to the real deep and dark theme running through. A gritty workout ensues and the sound takes leap as a much more prominent bass sound takes over. The break offers up a wall of white noise that rises on its way to the kick back and on the way it picks up a brilliant bass sequence. Top notch stuff yet again!

The original mix of ‘Curse Of Apollo’ intros with a beautiful bubbling effect on the sound, you get the sense of the sound rising up from the depths. Nice deep vibe running through with plenty of cool FX to keep the ears trained. A hypnotic synth line plays out and becomes a major focus within the track as an ever shifting drum arrangement keeps up a solid rhythm. The bass pulsates from the deep and keeps that dark them alive. The break leads us into a new path as the sound transforms superbly into something unexpected. The cool vocal samples are a nice addition to this relentless dark groover.

‘6th Circle’ is given the remix treatment by PH Zero and what a fantastic bit of work it is. The intro sets off with a superb arp that leads us into a full on stomper as chunky kicks and smooth percussions come into play. A deeper bass runs throughout as the arp transforms itself into many shapes. A nice big stab makes a show from time to time and blends well. Super tight arrangements keep the groove solid and on the break we get more of that big stab as it takes us back into the main track, stunning remix that is not to be missed.

‘1st Circle’ gets a remix from Aqob and takes the track on a very smooth journey. Cool robotic voice intro that leads to a chunky kick with a sweeping string in behind. A truly awesome deep, lush bass runs so smoothly through the sound that you will be forced to get up and dance. Percussions begin to layer in the structure and the rhythms begin to form beautifully into a solid groover. As the track progresses the arrangement becomes intricate with the additional patterns that really give a boost. The break descends into a simple arp and string combo before that beautiful big kick and bass come powering back. A definite must have track for your deeper sets, you will not be disappointed.

IVAN MASA – FROM LONDON EP (EYEPATCH RECORDINGS)

Italian DJ and producer Ivan Masa debuts on Eyepatch with the sublime three tracker ‘From London EP’ which also comes with two superb remixes to whet your appetite. Ivan grew up with music all around him so it’s no wonder his path led him to become involved in music. Having played at many gigs around his hometown Ivan soon found his niche within the early Acid sounds of the eighties. With successful releases across many labels we are delighted to welcome this great talent in the Bonzai family.

‘From London’ is up first and sets off on a smooth deep grooving ride as chunky kicks and sharp hats take over from a cool percussion led intro. Surreal chords are accompanied by a high pitched synth adding cool textures to the sound. The deep bass lifts the track up a notch and is soon joined by some vocal samples and a round of grungy synths, superb stuff!
The Original Mix of ‘Old School In My Skin’ has a very cool retro theme as expected from the title. A single high string is joined by a percussion line and a very cool vocal sample. Big phat kicks soon come through as a groovy bassline takes shape alongside funky house synths. The main break delivers a cool chord sequence with some quality snares taking us into each section before blasting back into this deep fuelled groove, top notch stuff!

Italian DJ and production duo 2Manyfold aka Francesco Fortini and Giovanni Martino are up on remix duty on ‘Old School In My Skin’. The guys have worked with Ivan in the past and have themselves released a multitude of track across many labels. Here they transform the original into a full on deep fuelled masterclass in house music. Nice and smooth snare driven intro with cool synths making their mark. The kicks really set the track up perfectly for the journey ahead with the vocal samples fitting in perfectly. The track evolves beautifully as a big bass sound bursts through to dominate. On the break a very well crafted synth sequence shines through before some smooth chords take over, excellent workout from these guys and definitely one to watch!

‘Sweet In My Heart’ is up next and intros with a fantastic vocal which soon leads to a massive kick and bass combo that will pump any floor. Big and bouncy grooves abound and as the sound progresses we get some funky synths and vocals which add huge character to the proceedings. Big tune here and a must for any box.

The Italian connection continues as Daniele Kama steps up to remix ‘Sweet In My Heart’. Daniele has already carved a cool niche with his sound and has appeared on the home of deep house, Piston Recordings, with his EP ‘She Appears’ in 2012 as well as other remixes on various Bonzai imprints. Here he keeps the deep grooves flowing with a stunning display of sounds. Nice and smooth intro as a sweeping synth is accompanied by a single clap, soon a huge kick appears and is suitably coupled with a pounding deep bass. The vocals are prominent throughout and on the main break they marry well with a dry, sublime melody. A sure fire big hitter here with all the qualities to rip up any floor.

ROY CLEVELAND – O (BONZAI ELEMENTAL)

[soundcloud id='118810101']

Italian musician and producer Paolo Petrella aka Roy Cleveland debuts on Elemental with his album “O”. He is a product of the Italian Conservatory of music in Napoli, Italy. A talented bassist, he describes himself as fitting into no particular genre, although he does profess to delve into glitchy minimal electro. This album entitled O (meaning circle) is so called as he wants the tracks to be seamless without pause, with each track melting into the next and rising up from the previous.

“O – #1″ sets us off on the album, sharp edged synth chords rise up and constantly transform from smooth to glitchy seamlessly. Superb basses infect the sound and an array of quality FX add lots of texture. Very clever and forward thinking and no need to adjust your speakers as the sound effect may have you believe.

“O – #2″ has much more of the qualities as the first track did, totally raw, organic sounds with some brilliant work on the frequency controls. A warm synth teases through the sea of sound and fades out leaving you waiting for more.

“O – #3 (Riots)” brings a warm synth to the fore, chopped up drum samples and more electro samples are processed beyond recognition, again we see lots of glitchy sounds and by the very concept of the album, those sounds fit beautifully.

“O – #4″ takes on a much more formulaic approach with beats becoming slightly more prominent, a darker side takes shape with hard edged beats and gritty basses. All this is accompanied by a multitude of organic FX which marry up brilliantly.

“O – #5″ takes us to the end of the journey with some eerie melodic sequences beginning to form out of strange synth patterns. A deep and dark bass resonates as this structure takes shape and again the FX work is top notch. Something different and definitely something to think about as this array of sounds raids your senses.
