Next up in our series of remixed classics, celebrating our 25th year, we present a contemporary take on one of our most recognisable anthems from back in the day. Progressive maestro Gai Barone takes the driving seat on this one as he delves deep into the anatomy of Universal Nation, penned in 1998 by a stalwart of Belgian trance – Push. From the very first play out, this one became an instant classic with its soaring synths, chugging bassline, swirling melodies and driving beats. It quickly gained a massive worldwide following as it spearheaded a burgeoning scene creating a multitude of hands in the air moments for the masses. Overwhelmed by the response, Push aka M.I.K.E. soon found himself travelling the world and playing out in front of thousands, both as a DJ and using a live band set-up. The track also spawned a plethora of remixes from a wide range of artists including Ferry Corsten and Oliver Lieb among others. In 2016, Universal Nation was voted number 1 on Studio Brussel’s The Greatest Switch Top 100 tracks which, stands as a testament to the high regard this track and its creator is held among music lovers. Over the last number of years one name has been synonymous with deep, melodic progressive grooves, Gai Barone. He delivers pure quality with everything he touches and is very much revered by his peers as an inspirational figure. He is no stranger to Bonzai Progressive, he’s contributed several tracks and remixes that have gained great support and he continues to lead the way with his tight production skills and creativity. The perfect choice for this one we think.
Ruslan returns with another quality cut, this time he brings us the top notch Matter & Light which is backed up with two superb remixes from Jakhira and Paul Kardos. Ruslan’s last outing – Blind Man’s Shine, drew a lot of attention and gained features on various portals including Beatport. Always one to deliver, we’re sure this latest slice will not disappoint.
Florence based DJ and producer Klaus Keller debuts on Piston recordings with the superb two tracker, The Beat Don’t Stop. Klaus started producing music at 14, just for passion, but he was always trying to improve and refine his style which, got him noticed some years later. He has released his work on various outlets including Something Different, Moustache Label and Different Attitudes. Klaus likes to deliver a hybrid sound from the worlds of digital and analogue, and this is what we are treated to on this one.
Returning to Piston Recordings after a bit of a hiatus we have Spanish DJ and producer Mianyo with his fantastic two track EP entitled Breaking Bytes. It was way back in 2014 when we last saw this guy here at Piston and we’re delighted he has returned. Since his Beat Club EP he has racked up quite an impressive list of quality cuts on various labels and has worked with a few top artists on other projects. Hopefully we’ll be seeing much more form this guy in the future.
Based in Billings, USA, J. Michael Kober debuts on Green Martian with the fantastic tow tracker entitled A Brief Infinity. J. Michael Kober is a relative newcomer to the scene, over the years he has familiarized himself with the technology and techniques that would eventually allow him to develop his sound, a blend of Progressive, Tech and Psy Trance with a focus on deep, dark, aggressive rhythms. A demo sent to JOOF Recordings in early 2010 caught the attention of John 00 Fleming, who featured it as the track of the month on his radio show and promptly signed it to his label, enlisting Magnus for the remix. Subsequent releases performed very well indeed as many top artists began to take notice. His DJ career began in 2009 with a residency on Sense.FM. The Essential Edge aired for over a year before he cancelled it due to creative differences. J. Michael has been very supportive in developing the local scene, working with promoters, using different events and club nights to explore other electronic styles. Much more to come from this guy in the future, well worth keeping an eye on.
Prolific Bonzai Progressive artist and purveyor of fine progressive beats, Phi Phi teams up with Roddy Reynaert for their superb two tracker Aokighara. He continues to deliver killer sets at top parties and radioshows and is a very much revered artist among many. Always a pleasure to see new material from this guy.
Italian DJ and producer Francesco Tegazzin aka Distilled Noise debuts on Piston Recordings with his Solid Roots EP. Growing up in and around Verona, Francesco found electronic music which he used to express his musical creativity. His roots lie in Blues and Rock n Roll and he uses these influences alongside vintage samples while shaping his own unique groove. We’re glad to have this young up and coming artist on the roster and we hope to see more in the future.
We continue our In The Mix sessions with another outstanding two part mix which has been beautifully crafted by none other than Phi Phi. This series is proving popular among many, each mix goes deep into the realms of progressive grooves, throwing up unexpected, surprising and intriguing twists and turns. With each session comes a master of their craft and Phi Phi is highly ranked as a master of all when it comes to stringing together a tight set. This guy retains his legendary status among a burgeoning DJ scene and, it’s little wonder given his pedigree and where he cut his teeth on the wheels of steel. At The Villa, Fuse, Boccaccio, Oxygene, Tour & Taxi, Cirao, Extreme, Pulp and Barocca are just some of the infamous venues to have welcomed him to the stage. He is also a major player on the retro circuit and features heavily in many Bonzai Retro events as well as many other club nights and festival events.
Matan Caspi returns with Luxurized which comes backed up with two tasty remixes that are sure to set the progressive world alight. Matan’s last outing here – Distant Muse – proved popular as did his remix for Iga Deep’s Indigo. We’re always blown away by this guys sound and you can put this one up there with some of his best work. Much more to come from Matan so stay tuned.
